Unfocused @Lx

The backstage area of the Toyota Center was bustling as Alex Shelley left the catering area and started toward production. When he came around the corner to where the main table was set up, he saw Wes Ikeda sitting behind two of the monitors, headphones on. Wes cocked the ear cups off his left ear as Alex approached.

Alex Shelley: Hey boss.

Wes Ikeda: Hey kid.

Alex shook his head and smirked.

Alex Shelley: Isn’t this my job now?

Wes was marking something off on a clipboard.

Wes Ikeda: Ah, feeling ready to run some of the production on your own, huh? Pulling double duty?

Alex Shelley: Hey, Joanie did it!

Alex saw Wes’ eyes shift just behind him and he heard a familiar voice.

Male Voice: You are no Joanie.

Alex sighed.

Alex Shelley: Hello Randy.

Randy Orton: Hey. No shame in it. I’m not either. Impossible heels to fill.

Randy pointed his narrowed gaze at Wes.

Randy Orton: Is this another week without Bray Wyatt on the show?

Wes Ikeda: Looks that way, yeah.

Randy Orton: You realize you got kids that have debuted in the last month and the world champion hasn’t even been on the card.

Alex inhaled as if to speak but was silenced with a look from Wes.

Wes Ikeda: I know what I’m doing.

Randy Orton: Want to enlighten the rest of us?

Wes Ikeda: Why do you care? Want to win King of the Ring?

Wes smirked. Randy shifted to Alex and then looked back to Wes.

Randy Orton: We’ll talk later.

Wes nodded, and Randy walked away. Alex looked after him for a moment.

Alex Shelley: What was that about?

Wes Ikeda: Randy’s just weighing his options. Looking out for Adam’s interests… and I think looking out for Blaine’s interests too.

Alex Shelley: I saw them working this afternoon.

Wes Ikeda: Randy and Blaine?

Alex Shelley: Yeah, Blaine took a high bump. They used a gymnastics mat. He’s got to work on his flat back, but it didn’t look too bad. Randy mostly teaching him?

Wes Ikeda: And Jericho.

Alex Shelley: Damn. I gotta imagine Adam is around sometimes too. That’s…. Damn. If he learns a third of what they know….

Wes Ikeda: There’s some things in wrestling you can’t teach.

Alex Shelley: You keep telling yourself that because you don’t want to believe the kid’s a natural.

Alex smirked and looked off in the direction Randy went.

Wes Ikeda: Don’t worry about him.

Alex Shelley: He really doesn’t like me. And I think in order to survive around here he might have to at least… tolerate me a little bit. I mean invoking the name of Joanie Helmsley…

Wes chuckled.

Wes Ikeda: I’ve known Randy for 14 years. In that time he’s actually respected exactly two people. One of them was Joanie Helmsley.

Alex Shelley: Who was the other?

Wes looked up, staring at Alex like he was an idiot.

Wes Ikeda: My sister.

Alex Shelley: Oh, right. I was expecting you to say Adam.

Wes chuckled again.

Wes Ikeda: That one depends on the day.

He teased. Alex stood contemplating for a moment.

Alex Shelley: So Randy respects two people and they’re basically fucking perfect.

Wes Ikeda: Like I said, don’t worry about him. He at least tolerates you a little bit, because you’re here. This is gonna work. It’s going to be fine. Don’t you… have a match?

Alex Shelley: Yes. Angelico.

Wes Ikeda; And you’ve watched tape on him?

Alex Shelley: I’m Mr. X-Division. I’m not worried about Angelico.

Wes Ikeda: That’s some famous last words, Pat.

Alex cringed at being called his government name, but chuckled.

Alex Shelley: Well, we both know I don’t need to win. I just need to show up. It’s a different phase of my career, you know?

Wes Ikeda: All too well.

Alex Shelley: We had fun wrestling together in Detroit, didn’t we?

He leaned forward, bracing himself on the table to look directly at Wes.

Alex Shelley: Maybe we both need to remember who we are, hmm?

Wes met his eyes, and briefly shook his head.

Wes Ikeda: I did not bring you back here to talk me into wrestling, Patrick Martin.

Alex Shelley: Ah, but wouldn’t it be awesome if I did?

He chuckled and turned, walking away. He was a few yards away when Wes called after him.

Wes Ikeda: She could take you, you know?

Alex turned around and cocked his head.

Alex Shelley: Who?

Wes Ikeda: Natalie. She’s going to kick your ass if you give me any wild ideas.

Alex Shelley: Sir, I would consider it a very wet dream come true to have my ass kicked by your wife.

Wes laughed out loud.

Wes Ikeda: Better go get your ass kicked by Angelico first.

Alex laughed too and shook his head, turning back toward the hallway to go to his locker room and prepare for the show. Wes had said that this was going to work, and feeling more and more at home, Alex dared to hope he could believe him.
